As a beachside community, Cronulla is known for its vibrant surf culture and the beautiful coastline it offers. However, with the thrill of the ocean comes situations where beachgoers of all ages and abilities are responsible for saving lives.

  • We know surfers are in the water 365 days a year from dawn until dusk and are most often the first to assist in emergencies.

  • Only 4% percent of all beaches patrolled by professional and volunteer lifeguards, surfers are our biggest asset when saving lives and the techniques taught have been proven to save lives using the ready-made rescue tools already on hand......your surfboard!

  • Less than 10% of all Australians being trained in CPR.

FREE Crucial Training to Save Lives

Cronulla RSL members & the Cronulla RSL community are invited to participate in a FREE board rescue and CPR course, operated by Surfers Rescue 24/7 . The course provides crucial training to assist in an emergency situation and could save a life.

📅 Saturday 7th October
🕘 9am
📍 Cronulla Beach

The award-winning course teaches crucial board rescue techniques that can be used to assist in an emergency situation and could ultimately save a life!

The Surfers Rescue 24/7 course consists of 2 x components:

  • Surfers Rescue 24/7 Course, learning basic rescue techniques using the equipment surfers already have on hand (their surf craft) - approx. 1.5 hours (South Cronulla Beach)

  • CPR Course - approx. 2 hours (held at Cronulla RSL)

These simple yet proven rescue techniques have been designed and endorsed by NSW Professional Lifeguards, The Australian Lifeguards Service (ALS), Surf Life Saving NSW (SLSNSW), and some of the world’s most elite surfers.

Cronulla RSL are encouraging recreational surfers of all skill levels to do the Surfers Rescue 24/7 course to learn these techniques, as well as be trained in CPR.

“From our iconic location, we see the community enjoying Bate Bay from dawn until dusk, and that our fantastic professional and volunteer lifeguards can’t always be on patrol all hours of the day” said Club CEO Sue McNeill.

Cronulla RSL acknowledges that surfers are an asset when it comes to responding effectively in a potentially life-threatening situation.

“We have a staff member that knows this first-hand, being rescued herself by a surfer during an accident in the waterways” said McNeill.

Isabelle White, The Club’s Customer Service Manager, was rescued from the water by a surfer after sustaining a blow to the head by her board during a surfing incident at the far end of a patrolled beach. If it wasn’t for the quick-thinking actions of a nearby surfer, Isabelle may not be with us today.

“The Club places immense value on the support of this Surfers Rescue 24/7 Board Rescue CPR Course. We recognise the critical role it plays in empowering community members with lifesaving skills and contributing to the overall safety and resilience of our coastal community” McNeill said.

Only 4% percent of all beaches patrolled by professional and volunteer lifeguards,
The course was sparked by a need to cover the gap between patrolled beaches and remote beaches in an effort to reduce deaths from drowning in NSW.

About Surfers Rescue 24/7

Surfers Rescue 24/7 is a free CPR and board rescue course for any recreational surfer in NSW, WA, and VIC.

Beach usage, whether for sport, recreation or competition, comes with inherent risk – the program aims to minimise this risk through the provision of free training to the surfing community.

In conjunction with pro-surfers who are currently working as lifeguards, Surfing NSW has identified board rescue techniques that may prove to be crucial in times of need.

Surfing NSW, with the support of the NSW Government, is giving all surfers in NSW the opportunity to do a free CPR and board rescue course – “Surfers Rescue 24/7”.

Surfing has been part of Australian society since the late 50s, and during this time, recreational surfers from all walks of life have been instrumental in helping to keep our beaches safe.

Be it a patrolled or an unpatrolled beach across NSW, surfers are on the beach from dawn to dusk, 365 days a year. Surfers are often responsible for hundreds of thousands of unsung rescues.
